'Star Wars: Clones' coming to Imax September 10, 2002 Posted: 10:48 AM EDT (1448 GMT)
"Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones" will be receiving the big-screen Imax treatment.
HOLLYWOOD, California (Reuters) -- Twentieth Century Fox is cloning an Imax version of "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones," and the studio predicts mega-resolution visuals will stoke big interest when re-formatted prequel unspools November 1 in more than 70 giant-screen theaters, Variety reports.
"You couldn't find a movie better suited to the Imax format," Fox distribution president Bruce Snyder said Monday.
"Clones" thus becomes the second live action re-release to be scheduled for Imax re-formatting since company unveiled a proprietary conversion process in March. An Imax version of Universal/Imagine's "Apollo 13" bows September 20 in 22 locations.
Snyder plans to unspool "Clones" in about 50 Imax commercial venues in the U.S. and Canada, and another 20-30 Imax theaters based in science museums and other institutions.
Executives believe the picture could add at least $20 million to its current $300 million-plus domestic total. There are no plans to distribute the Imax version of "Clones" internationally.
The Imax-format "Clones" is expected to run about seven weeks, set just after "Apollo" and before "The Lion King." The Mouse House has its own process for converting cartoons into Imax format and plans to release its upcoming "Treasure Planet" simultaneously in conventional and giant-screen theaters in November.
Time-consuming process Snyder said Fox is likely to do a simultaneous Imax release of one of its first-run live actioners eventually. But the frame-by-frame conversion process takes at least five weeks, so the studio can't commit too far in advance to any specific title until a conventional print is delivered.
Snyder wouldn't speculate on any possible slate titles that might prove Imax-friendly. But early speculation elsewhere has February's "Daredevil" as a likely candidate, and there's talk that Steven Spielberg's "Minority Report" could become a second title from the Fox catalog to be converted into the Imax format.
A second studio's embrace of Imax's conversion process is notable, as the tech vendor has long searched for a way to deliver more mainstream Hollywood content to Imax-equipped theaters. Disney's offering tooners for Imax distributing for the past few years has represented a welcome addition to the usual assortment of Imax nature and science documentaries, but the holy grail has been Hollywood-quality live action features.
Now, it appears that push is finally paying off. Other studios are believed also interested in eventually joining Fox and Universal in converting live actioners to the Imax format, with Warner Bros. considering the possible simultaneous release of a first-run film in giant-screen theaters.
"They've been very interested in a couple of our movies, and we are interested as well," Warner Bros. distribution president Dan Fellman said.
But nothing's imminent, Fellman added. And though sci-fi and other visually dense pictures potentially benefit most from conversion to the high-res format, Warners definitely won't be sending May-slotted "The Matrix Reloaded" into any Imax theaters, he said.
'New way to experience the "Star Wars" universe' Lucasfilm marketing VP Jim Ward said the planned "Clones" re-release "will provide an entirely new way to experience the 'Star Wars' universe."
But the lure isn't simply getting to see a bunch of rocket ships and aliens on a 100-foot-wide screen. Imax's new proprietary conversion process allows studios for the first time to cheaply convert live-action motion pictures into a resolution vastly enhanced from conventional images.
Previously, films including Warner Bros.' "The Matrix" and DreamWorks' "The Gladiator" have been shown at a few Imax theaters. But those involved similarly blowing up images projected from a conventional 35mm negative.
The new Imax format has produced uniformly enthusiastic responses from press and execs attending demos of selected stock footage converted to Imax specs. And the re-release of 1995's "Apollo 13" -- which detailed heroic struggles of ill-fated moon mission's heroic crew -- would seem to neatly bridge both the educational origins of Imax exhibition and the format's burgeoning commercial possibilities.
"We believe that 'Apollo' -- as a piece of history -- will play for 15 or 20 years in the Imax system," Imagine Entertainment president Michael Rosenberg said.
For that reason, Universal and Imagine aren't focused on big theater counts or early box office bang from the re-release but rather a slow-and-steady return on the project's multimillion investment, Rosenberg said.
Imax Filmed Entertainment president Greg Foster has been Toronto-based company's point man in Hollywood for the picture-conversion campaign. A spokesman said meetings with executives at various major studios continue, but no other announcements are imminent.

Sept 6 2002 Hayden's Hygiene Horror
Star Wars actor Hayden Christensen has a hygiene problem - according to his London theatre co-star Jake Gyllenhaal. The two movie heart-throbs starred in This Is Our Youth in the West End's Garrick Theatre earlier this year. Jake, currently starring alongside Friends star Jennifer Aniston in movie The Good Girl, recalls how Hayden's armpits stank so much that after touching him, the smell remained on Jake's skin for days. Jake says, "Man, he didn't wash his clothes for the entire run of the show. On the last night, I accidentally put my arm in his armpit during a fight scene and, even after showering, couldn't get rid of the smell. It was f**king gross." *my 2 cents worth..seems like jake is a bit jealous bringing this up now! I'd die to be in his shoes

Aug 22 2002 LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "Star Wars Episode II" star Hayden Christensen will have neither the Force or a computer-generated weapon to help him in his next adventure.
Christensen, 21, will take part in the 2002 "Eco-Challenge" race in Fiji in October. The event, created by "Survivor" mastermind Mark Burnett, will be broadcast on the USA Network.
The man who would be Darth Vader will compete with his brother, Tove, sister, Hejsa, and family friend Bill Trayling in the 500-kilometer race that will force teams to hike, swim, kayak and mountain bike their way through the Fiji archipelago. Sixty-seven four-person teams competed in the 2001 race in New Zealand, with 55 finishing ahead of the 10-day limit.
Burnett insists that Christensen's participation is not a stunt.
"To us, he is racing as an athlete and on his own merits, not as a celebrity, " Burnett tells The Hollywood Reporter. "He has been training hard and is complying with the same stringent rules and regulations as the other competitors."
That's not to say, of course, that his participation won't be used to promote the race on USA. The network has dropped hints that other celebrities may take part as well.
Christensen's next movie project is "Shattered Glass," based on the true story of Stephen Glass, a hotshot magazine writer who fabricated sources and quotes for a number of high-profile stories. He's also committed to "Star Wars Episode III," due in theaters in 2005.
Wednesday Aug 21, 2002 8:07 AM PT Sept 2002 Insight magazine..here is what the article says;
"Celebrity Crush: Hayden Christensen's Trip to the Dark Side"
He's always playing the troubled young guy full of emotion and searching for himself... and we love him for it. Who are we walking about? None other than Hayden Christensen! Hayden has been the swoon-worthy object of affection for thousands of ladies ever since he first took center stage. His appeal comes from more than his intense stare, dark, spiky crop, and lean build; it's everything all rolled up into one that makes Hayden quite a catch, and a legend in the making.
Hayden caught the attention of fans (and the industry at large) when he first appeared on the first Canadian television soap opera, 'Family Passions,' when he was just 12-years-old. This Canadian cutie wowed audiences with his powerful performances then, and struck gold again with a starring role in the FOX Family Channel Hit, 'Higher Ground.' On the show, Hayden played the drug-addicted teen, Scott Barringer, and won the hearts of young ladies nationwide. Although the show didn't last, Hayden's popularity among viewers certainly did!
From his small screen roots, Hayden made a leap into the big screen arena. In 2001, Hayden starred in the drama, 'Life As A House,' costarring Kevin Kline, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Jenna Malone. Playing Sam, the troubled, drug-addicted high schooler who is forced to spend the summer building a house with his father, was an intense and exhausting role for Hayden to tackle, and his performance earned him much critical acclaim. However, even with the high praise and recognition that his previous roles have afforded this young actor, it was landing the role in his next big screen project that catapulted Hayden into the limelight. The world sat up and took notice when Hayden took to the big screen as the teenage Anakin Skywalker in the recent release "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones."
As mentioned earlier, Hayden has a knack for picking out characters with a troubled soul. Perhaps that's why when Star Wars creator George Lucas went shopping for an actor to play the pivotal role of Anakin Skywalker, the guy who would become the infamous Darth Vader, he pinned his hopes on Hayden.
Even though hundreds of actors auditioned for the role as Anakin, George claims that Hayden first caught his eye when he saw a tape of the pilot episode for 'Higher Ground.' Later, he thought that Hayden would look too young beside Natalie Portman's Queen Amidala/Padme' character. Ultimately, Hayden's good looks, easy charm, and onscreen chemistry with Natalie, won the director over. In fact, George Lucas released a statement in which he said, "Hayden is very talented; he has a great command of his craft, and I know that he has the physical and emotional attributes to play Anakin Skywalker at perhaps the most complex stage of Anakin's life."
We know that several things have contributed to Hayden's success. What casting director wouldn't want to hire this brooding hunk the moment he stepped through the door? His tall frame (he's 6' 1"!), intense stare (we always get the feeling that this cutie is plotting something big, and we can't wait to see what it is!), and bad boy style absolutely commands our attention. Hayden is a really sweet guy who isn't about to let his newfound fame go to his head. "My parents aren't concerned that I'll go off the deep end after 'Star Wars," Hayden confesses. "They know I have my feet on the ground and that I'm a cautious boy. They worry about the intrusion into my private life, but not me suddenly getting a whole new set of wants and needs that aren't really a reflection of my upbringing." What more proof do you need that he is totally down-to-earth?
Despite rumors to the contrary, Hayden insists that the only woman in his life is.. his mom! "She's the most kind, loving, giving woman," Hayden gushes. "She loves her children an enormous amount so it's hard not to show the same in return." Aww! We get weak in the knees just thinking about him! In fact, we're awfully jealous of that Natalie Portman; she gets to cuddle up to the cutie in not one, but two films! That's right, with Episode II still storming through theaters, plans are already under way for Episode III to come to a theater near you in 2005. Natalie and Hayden will reprise their roles in the upcoming flick, and we can't wait to see what is revealed in the next Star Wars story. Look for this, and other Hayden sightings to come!

"STAR Wars" hunk Hayden Christensen looked ready to brandish his light saber while huddling with B-movie beauty Kari Wuhrer at Bungalow 8 the other night. The two shared several glasses of Cristal, our witness reports. It was an eventful night for Chistensen. Earlier, as she was driving from The Park to Bungalow 8 with celebrity booker Lori Levine, a crazed female fan yanked open the car door at a stoplight and tried to pull Levine out of the car to get to Christensen. The driver was able to speed off before the fan did any damage.~Thank you Sophia for this info!
